Default File query - 10/07/2007, 2:08 PM

Hi can someone shed some light onto the following files - what are they and can they be deleted?

They are located in the root folder /tmp

<TABLE class=yui-dt-table id=yui-dt-table1 tabIndex=0><TBODY class=" yui-dt-body" tabIndex=-1><TR class=" yui-dt-odd yui-dt-selected" id=yui-dt1-bdrow7 yuiRecordId="yui-dtrec15"><TD class=" yui-dt-string diricon yui-dt-first" id=yui-dt1-bdrow7-cell0 headers=yui-dtcol2 columnIndex="0"></TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string yui-dt-editable" id=yui-dt1-bdrow7-cell1 headers=yui-dtcol3 columnIndex="1">cpanel.TMP.hF4yeqmLGaPmfSDf</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string" id=yui-dt1-bdrow7-cell2 headers=yui-dtcol4 columnIndex="2">16 MB</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string" id=yui-dt1-bdrow7-cell3 headers=yui-dtcol5 columnIndex="3">text/x-generic</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-number yui-dt-editable yui-dt-last" id=yui-dt1-bdrow7-cell4 headers=yui-dtcol6 columnIndex="4">0644</TD></TR><TR class=" yui-dt-even yui-dt-selected" id=yui-dt1-bdrow8 yuiRecordId="yui-dtrec16"><TD class=" yui-dt-string diricon yui-dt-first" id=yui-dt1-bdrow8-cell0 headers=yui-dtcol2 columnIndex="0"></TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string yui-dt-editable" id=yui-dt1-bdrow8-cell1 headers=yui-dtcol3 columnIndex="1">cpanel.TMP.kl7q2dRoxlSh6eWH</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string" id=yui-dt1-bdrow8-cell2 headers=yui-dtcol4 columnIndex="2">16 MB</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string" id=yui-dt1-bdrow8-cell3 headers=yui-dtcol5 columnIndex="3">text/x-generic</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-number yui-dt-editable yui-dt-last" id=yui-dt1-bdrow8-cell4 headers=yui-dtcol6 columnIndex="4">0644</TD></TR><TR class=" yui-dt-odd yui-dt-last yui-dt-selected" id=yui-dt1-bdrow9 yuiRecordId="yui-dtrec17"><TD class=" yui-dt-string diricon yui-dt-first" id=yui-dt1-bdrow9-cell0 headers=yui-dtcol2 columnIndex="0"></TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string yui-dt-editable" id=yui-dt1-bdrow9-cell1 headers=yui-dtcol3 columnIndex="1">cpanel.TMP.pz6Xdu6xmxwNYO0r</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string" id=yui-dt1-bdrow9-cell2 headers=yui-dtcol4 columnIndex="2">58 MB</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-string" id=yui-dt1-bdrow9-cell3 headers=yui-dtcol5 columnIndex="3">text/x-generic</TD><TD class=" yui-dt-number yui-dt-editable yui-dt-last" id=yui-dt1-bdrow9-cell4 headers=yui-dtcol6 columnIndex="4">0644</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

They are just temporary files used by CPanel when performing various operations (both user induced and automated). They are safe to be deleted but they should be deleted when CPanel has finished with them so I wouldn't worry about them.

Thanks Kieran

The issue is with the total size of the files, and this is the first time I've seen them this big.

I do need to get rid but I don't want to break anything!!

How can you tell if they are still in use?

Cheers

What sizes are we talking here? Are they growing and if so at what rate?

The sizes are in the intial post but they are stable with no changes.

I've renamed them in the hope that will tell me pretty quickly if they are needed.

I'll leave it a week, download them and then delete them.

<<< holding my breath >>>

Thanks for the advice Kieran

Simon,

As they are in /tmp - they generally will not count towards your quota unless they are owned by your username.

Assuming you can delete them - they will be owned by you. They'll be deleted over time by cPanel.

Thanks Matt

Odd thing is they are or must be owned by the client as they all affect the amount of space on their account.

The client seems to be unaware how these files got there.

I can't see the file extensions [if they have any] either so I can't even try and discover how they might have got there - can you help with that or give your best guess from the file names?

You can see who owns them for sure by doing in the /tmp directory when logged in over SSH:-

ls -lh | grep "cpanel.TMP"

To see what they might contain and/or try and work out how they got there then you could download them to your hard drive and view them using a reputable and robust text editor (given the size) and see what they contain.

Simon,

Have they (or do they) used the File Manager in cPanel recently?

Thanks Kieran I'll check that out.

Matt - yeah they must have used the File Manager as I got a screen shot of the files in question taken of the File Manager screen when they were reporting the issue.
