Default Smtp mail - 15/05/2006, 1:45 PM

Hi,
Wonder if anyone can help me with this. I've never really looked at this because everything works just fine with pop3/smtp.

A client has recently installed an exchange server at their offices and they have had nothing but problems ever since.
They have been told this morning that their incoming mail needs to be smtp and not pop3.

Can anyone give any pointers as to how or if I can set this up in cpanel or whm?

SMTP is a send mail protocol, you cannot recieve mail via that method. POP3 and IMAP are the only ways to recieve mail. Both POP3 and IMAP can be accessed (on their respecitive default ports) by using mail.yourdomain.tld (they are both enabled automatically), and authenticating in with the e-mail address and password that your mail account is setup as using. SMTP to send mail requires authentication too and is also available on mail.yourdomain.tld.

Whilst we would not recommend it (possibly look for a pop3 connector), but we can do it.

We would simply modify the primary MX record to point to your Exchange server but the IP address must be static and no change.

Hi,
I did come to that conclusion. The trouble is that they have had so many problems with their new exchange server and they keep coming to me as if it's my fault.

It was apparently their "techie guy" who informed them that I would need to change my settings.

Basically, their exchange server is collecting the mail but then it dissapears. But there are no problems as far as I can see at this end. It has to be a problem at their end.

Cheers Kieran

Oops, sorry Tom, crossover,
They currently have 6 accounts with me, can I change the Mx for all six to point to their server.

If so could we go ahead and do this?

I'll look into pop3 connectors though!

Cheers
mike

That would usually be as a result of using POP3 instead of IMAP, which deletes items from the server after POP'ing them by default, unlike IMAP that simply provides a window to view/move etc. the mail until you specifically specify it is to be purged. With POP3 you have to specifically specify when you collect mail that you want it to remain on the server.

Hi,
Thanks again Kieran!

Tom, strike what I said up there for now. I'm going to reccommend they try a connector to see if that works.
If that doesn't work I might have to come back for more info.

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

What version of Exchange are they using?
Is it included in a Windows Small Business Server or running on plain Windows Server?

The POP3 connector in SBS2003 seems quite reliable these days, otherwise they might want to look at a connector such a PopWeasel http://www.mailgate.com/products/wfeatures.asp

Regards,
Ian

Hi Ian,
It's not easy trying to work things out from a distance but I think it's an SBS2003. It does collect the mail from the pop3 which is as far as I can see really. Some of it even gets delivered. I don't know anything about it really, but I've read up a little today and passed on some info. I'll pass this one on as well -the diagram will be good for them!
I've learned a bit about mail stuff today too!

Cheers
Mike
