Default e-mail question - 10/05/2006, 12:15 PM

I have a customer that has asked the following question;

Quote:
What is the maximum size limitation of each e-mail (maximum attachment size)
Obviously I will advise if they are using a mail client, i.e. outlook there will not be a limit but what if they want to use web based mail. Is there a limit and if so, what is it?

Cheers

Depends what the webmail uses to run. If it is php then usually the limit for an attachment will be 2Mb, depending on if the default has been over-ridden or not. Squirrelmail for example though seems to imply from what it says in the compose screen that the "limit" has been re-set at 50Mb. For SMTP via outlook etc. there shouldn't be a limit, although don't quote me on that one

Recieve wise though, the e-mail account has to be large enough to recieve the mail and its attachment (even if you are pop'ing the account using outlook or similar), so although there is no limit on the attachment size per e-mail, there is an upper limit of the space allocated to the whole account when empty.

As Kieran said.. There is no limit on the actual message. However, the maximum size could be the mailbox size.

If you have a 10mb mailbox and receive a 11mb mail attachment, it will rejected as you don't have enough quota.

Same thing applies if you have a 10mb mailbox, have 3mb of mail there already and receive a 8mb attachment - it will bounce due to no space.

Hope this helps.

Matt
