Default Resellers - 18/08/2004, 5:36 PM

Hi chaps!

I'm cracking away with my reselling, especially since my "real" business is sooo damn slow!

Started by doing some basic sites for friends with small businesses etc. That's going fine, I just register the domain through Xilo and set them up. It's going too well in fact, getting earbashed from wifey every night cos I'm always busy!

Anyways, some of them want me to host domains that they already own. So my question is..... And yep there's always a question..... lol how do I have their domain transferred to me directly? Or do I have to have it transferred to Xilo every time?

The reason I ask is something Andy said about letting the clients know what your costs were!! Eeek...... lol

One more question, do I need to go through Xilo every time to point a newly transferred site to Xilo DNS, or is there a way I can do that?

Cheers chaps, it's been quiet here so I guess you're all sunning on a beach somewhere, but if you're around...........

Hi Cunning,

There are a few ways that you can organise this ...

You can leave the domain with its current registrar (if practical) and just update the nameservers for the domain to point to the nameservers for your Xilo server.

Or you can get the domain transferred into your domain control panel at Xilo, which means that you will be responsible to the renewal fees (and then charge the customer your own rate!).

Also, if you want to transfer the domain away from the current registrar, you could move it to a 3rd party domain management/registration account and control the nameservers from there.

There are a number of options and you don't have to do the same thing for all your accounts.

Regards,
Ian

Another way would be to sign up with enom, that way you can sell domain names yourself and manage them. You can sign up though Xilo. You are required to fund your enom account ($100 minimum).

You can transfer domains to your enom account (though currently you can not transfer uk domains (.co.uk etc)), your clients then remain as the domain owner, and you act as the "registrar"

You'll need to ask Xilo regarding setting up a Enom reseller account, as the domain page on xilo's site seems to be down.

Thanks chaps,
Ian, how do I update the DNS to point to my new domains?

I know the guys here are probably really busy, I'm never quite sure whether they've been repointed or not........ and I hate to keep mailing them asking.

ie. I've asked for three domains to be repointed to Xilo on Monday but none are showing yet? Is that usual? Is there something I can do with cPanel.

Sorry about all the questions, I am new to this but a very quick learner I promise!!!

Cheers

Hi Cunning,

It depends on if you have control of your domains - do you have a control panel (from the domain registrar, not the CPanel hosting control panel) on which you can update the nameservers? If not you will be relying on the person/company controlling the domain to do this for you.

When you update the nameservers for a domain it can take from 24 to 48 hours for changes to a .uk domain to propogate, whilst a TLD (.com etc.) domain can take longer.

For the three domains that you want to move to Xilo - where are the domains registered?

Regards,
Ian

I've checked whois, they're all registered here now (xilo), have been for a few days, one still has the old hosts DNS (pipex) but they tell me they transferred the site on Tuesday. Seems xilo haven't repointed it.

Don't have a CP from the registrar because I was quite happy for xilo to host. I am quite new to this and it seemed simpler. But it's getting to the point now where people are chasing me and I don't seem to have a definitive answer..... And I hate that! lol

So how would I "get control" of my domains? Do xilo supply a cp for controlling dns?

Thanks for your help,

Steve,

We are developing a control panel to do lots of things with your accounts, however, its not yet live.

Nominet should send an email to us when the domain is re-tagged - but we have not got this.

I will call Nominet today and find out what is going on.

Thanks

Matt

How did you get on Matt?

I'm still waiting on those four accounts to get going, the .com one is showing locked, the stsc*****.co.uk is still pointing to pipex (WHOIS database last updated at 09:40:00 21-Aug-2004), the biz -who knows, and the other divas-****.co.uk is looking OK now I hope?

Please let me know cos three out of those four (the three that we're not sure on as luck would have it) aren't mine, so I'm getting nagged!!! LOL

Cheers

Cunning
