Default Bandwidth monitoring (importance: low) - 07/05/2005, 1:10 AM

heya,

I rent a server in one of your facilities and i was wondering if you could provide some bandwidth monitoring tools (such as flow-tools or cflowd or...) for us to use in the client area. It would be really cool to be able to see traffic by IPs, ports, etc.

I use mrtg and a bunch of home grown rrdtool-based scripts, but given my abilities in reverse polish notation, I'd rather have an alternative to see what goes in and out of my box...

thanks!

Hello JBR,

Thank you for your post. We do monitor all switch ports as well as uplinks, however, we have never really thought of showing flow stats on a per customer basis.

Certainly it is something we can look into. On a related note, it is also possible to monitor connections per port by the use of ipchains/iptables.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply.

Indeed I get some graphs from the firewall per port, and some more aggregated information from MRTG.

Unfortunately, MRTG reports much less traffic than my tools, and the weird thing is that my tools seem consitent with netstat, unlike MRTG -- but they probably aren't correct either. That's why some data from someone that knows what she/he's doing would be helpfull.

Some of the graphs are there - http://jesus.sakeos.net/rrd/ - most of them are taken from pf labels (the box is a freebsd). if someone could use these tools tell me, i can publish the source.

JB,

Those graphs are very impressive! I must personally play with BSD sometime - im mainly a linux man

I'll see what we can do to get it added to the client area.
