Default Worries about transfering hosts - 01/12/2005, 12:44 PM

Hi,

Firstly, I want to thank Matt for been patient, with the 1001 questions fired at him via email. As you can understand I have been with the same hosting company for six years, and only until they were taken over have they started to perform very badly.

I've done alot of research into this move, and because I want to make the right decision for the business - whilst my current host are having problems, I am currently loosing money by the hour.

I have a few more questions if that is okay.

What does colocated mean, and does this have a disadvantage or advantage to the service that Xilo.net provide?

I think my 'techie' might have emailed you this question. but since I can't get hold of him, I am hoping you could give me the answer.

What version of GD library do you run on your servers and are Register_Globals ON or OFF It is important that Register_Globals is ON and GD library 2 is installed otherwise we will have to modify php scripts to get things to work like forms and resizing images automatically.

If I signed up at the weekend, would the account be created Monday?

That's all for now

Darren

Hi Darren,

Colocation is good if you can either afford the best hardware with RAID, redundant PSUs (power supplies) etc. With colocation, you are responsible for the hardware and the up-keep of it.

However, its a dedicated resource to you and your sites and means you are not sharing with anyone else.

GD is version 2.x and you can choose if register_globals is on or off. Simply a line in .htaccess with enable/disable it.

If you sign up at the weekend - it will be activated at the weekend

Thanks Tom.

Is the register_globals defaulted to on - or does it depend completely on what is in the .htaccess file?

Final question (I hope!)

The mysql databases are (11mb, 6mb and 5mb) I am looking to go to the reseller package as recommended by Matt - I have 2 websites, 1 large and another growing daily. Because of the size of the databases I can't import them via the mysql panel due to a timeout - how can I import these critical databases quickly and with very little techical knowledge!

Hi,

It is defaulted to ON.

If you can either upload the dump files from your other host, we can import them or if you can give us the details of the other database server, we can try and get these for you.

Thanks Tom.

Your the only hosting company I've contacted who have said

The rest have mentioned SSH and baffled me with technical language! What I am going to do is transfer one of my websites, which and see how this goes before moving the big monster of a site over! haha

If I sign up for the £10 reseller, can I upgrade easily? I have two sites, so will want dedicated IP when I upgrade to the £20 reseller.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for setting up the account so quickly. Just a few issues probably due to the lack of my own knowledge of moving domains.

I have set up my ftp for ftp.mydomain.com and used the username and password in the email. It's looking like it's pointing to the IP at my current host.

Will it take 24/48 hours before this changes over so that I can load all of the files onto the server?

Also, I cannot seem where I create mysql databases within the WebHost Manager. Please could you direct me.

Many thanks,

Darren

Only me!

The domain registration company I used for my domain has asked me to unlock it via the control panel - appears I can change the name servers etc from here.

Not sure what Im supposed to do - don't mind giving you access if it'll sort it out so I can upload the files and set up the databases.

Ta
