Default Local net ? - 26/05/2005, 5:28 PM

Hello,

Could you tell me if it is possible to get a private LAN in the colo ?

We're thinking about renting a few servers and are wondering how we would be billed for their communications (the servers will failover for each-other, use a centralized ldap db, maybe a mysql cluster and all the rest of it) and the plan should be to do that for a few more servers if we can get things working properly.

must we rent a dedicated switch for that or can we use the shared switch (and not be billed for all the net activity between the boxes) ? we're not going to do any cleartext so using a shared switch is good enought, but we'd rather keep the 1TB of bandwith to send stuff to the world (we'll be doing video so the bandwidth consumption may be scary).

thanks!

Hi JB.

I am going to find out if both options are possible. I am to the understanding that we would have to place you on your own private LAN as we monitor each external facing switch port for "used" bandwidth.

So, even if you were to only use say 60gb of outbound "internet" traffic, we would not be able to see that mixed in with the internal machine to machine traffic.

I'll update this ticket shortly once I found out the best solution.

Hi JB.

After further discussion there is really only one option; getting your own switch.

The costs involved are as follows;

£7 per machine for the switch and £7 per machine for the second NIC.

Meaning you would need to add £14 to each machine. We can also provide the NICs on a one off cost of £55 (so you would only add £7 to each machine monthly for the switch connection).

Let me know if I can help further.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the update. Did you consider the option of having just one NIC per computer (with aliases for the private nets) and have the switch face the internet (the switch would be the 1st hop for these computers) - 2nd hop would be the switch were you bill the traffic ?

Well, ignore me if you did - it's just that i hate cables :-)

Thanks for the quick update - in any case sounds like a fair price and a good solution.

bye,
jb
