What little experience I've had of vBulletin I'd agree with Darren; its a good application.

Only problem I have with it is that it costs money

I don't think its expensive, but then if it was a forum that generated no income and run as a hobby, then I can understand it being expensive.

Advertising on my forum has covered the cost of the licence.

As with many things its horses for courses. If you hate ads and don't make money from your site vBulletin is a no-no.

If on the other hand you have an income from it or don't mind ads, then its a good thing.
