Default Web Hosting Articles - 30/05/2006, 9:55 AM

Has anyone written, or know of an article for beginners.

I have a large number of clients who don't own a website to promote their holiday home, and a number of them have expressed an interest in creating a website.

I'm trying to get a set of articles for help on:

- buying a domain name
- creating hosting account
- uploading files to a hosting account

These have to be written for complete beginners and people that are not into computers and are not experienced in the internet.

The article(s) will be featured on an online magazine to 2,000 subscribers

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Travellinglad

Probably a dumb answer but why don't you offer to do it all for them. If you have a number of them would it not be worthwhile offering your services and design/host the sites yourself.

Do a yell.com and use the one template, offer an all in package but not at the rip off charges that yell charge.

Dvotee,

Not a dumb question - I don't class myself as a website designer, all my sites have taken ages to build because of a lack of knowledge.

Potentially for a web design company the magazine could be a great source of advertising for clients.

I wouldn't mind assisting with these; what kind of help do you need? When do you need the articles for? I've written quite a few general purpose guides on a number of technical type things in the past so have a bit of an idea about the best way to word things for beginners, but it all depends on what kinds of things you are after as to if I can be of help or not

For example; does it matter what ftp client is used in the guide, does it assume using the same company for web hosting and domain names so would it require instructions on changing DNS pointers etc.

Kieran,

The articles will be used on an online magazine that I am working on - basically many of the subscribers don't have a website, and the questions I receive are usually around - how do I search / buy a domain name? etc.

I'm going to split up into several sections, but first would be how do I search for a domain name and include things to do with making sure the name isn't trademarked etc.

The first out is due for publication on Thurs 1 June, so I think unless someone already has such an article I am going to have to write something myself.

Darren

Whoa, 1st June, yeah, I don't have something that could be pressed directly into service by that time I'm afraid

Best of luck with it though

Yeah I know - talk about late notice huh

I was let down by two other writers, so I'm trying to think of content to add to it. I'll know where to come in future though

Yeah by all means if you want some small articles doing in the future and can provide a weeks notice or so then I'm more than happy to help out

Hi Darren,

I wouldn't mind doing articles like this too as it actually ties in with something on my ToDo list. All I'd want in return is the credit for having written it and a link back to one of my websites. I think that's the standard deal.

If that sounds okay, give me a topic and I'm away!

One question, would it have to be text only or would screenshots be appropriate? I could probably do a couple of Flash tutorials too given enough time. A month maybe.

Interestingly, I have some software being worked on now that might be of interest to your clients. So get in touch either way.

Cheers,

Frank.
